Conservation Issue

The isolated islands of Seychelles are a fragile home to a variety of unique and amazing plants and animals. Their survival is threatened by a host of past and present human activities from the removal of forest and coastal pollution to the introduction of alien species and over exploitation of the marine environment.

An important initiative in raising local awareness and support has been the creation of the Wildlife Clubs of Seychelles (WCS). FOC is supporting the work of the WCS - the WCS have a high profile in the Seychelles, promoting conservation and environmental education for children. If you would like to support the work of the WCS please click here.

Wildlife

The scattered granitic and coral islands that make up the remote islands of the Seychelles are a fragile home to a variety of amazing animals. The islands comprise 20 Important Bird Areas (10 bird species are threatened or endangered) and are home to two species of turtle, the hawksbill and green turtle. Three species of giant turtle were presumed to be extinct but recent research indicates the possible survival of two species.

Habitat

A number of schemes are underway to protect the islands remnant biodiversity. The WCS are involved in a wide variety of activities such as planting native trees, visiting nature reserves, creating school exhibits and undertaking habitat restoration.

Community

Some 800 children currently participate through 30 clubs run by WCS. Despite their success the WCS wish to reach more children and to become more accessible to the general public. FOC is helping finance the administrative needs of these clubs to help more children learn about their natural environment and how it can be preserved.
